Frequently Asked Questions
How do I record audio?
Tap the + button on the home screen and select "Record". Configure your quality settings (up to 48kHz lossless) and channel configuration (mono or stereo). Press the red record button to begin capturing. All recordings are saved locally on your device.
What is stem separation and how does it work?
Stem separation uses on-device AI to split any audio track into its component parts: vocals, drums, bass, and other instruments. This process runs entirely on your device—your audio never leaves your phone. You can isolate, preview, and export each stem individually in various formats.
Is my audio uploaded to the cloud?
No. Tapes is an offline-first application. All processing (stem separation, MIDI conversion, key/BPM detection, etc.) happens locally on your device. Your recordings never leave your phone unless you explicitly share or export them. We have zero access to your audio files.
What audio formats does Tapes support?
Import: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, AIFF, FLAC, MIDI
Export: MP3 (via LAME engine), WAV (lossless PCM), M4A (AAC optimized), FLAC (lossless compressed)
How does Audio-to-MIDI conversion work?
Tapes analyzes your audio and converts melodic content into MIDI data. The on-device AI detects pitch, timing, and velocity to create playable MIDI files. Best results are achieved with monophonic audio (single instrument/voice). You can preview MIDI with built-in soundfonts and export to your DAW.
Can I organize my recordings into folders?
Yes! Create "Tapes" (folders) to organize related recordings. You can nest Tapes within Tapes for hierarchical organization. Add session notes, tags, and metadata to any recording for easy searching and retrieval.
How do I share to Instagram Stories?
Open any track, tap the Share button, and select "Social Export". Customize your snippet duration, choose a visualizer theme, and decide whether to overlay audio. Tap the Instagram icon to share directly as a Story or Reel.
What is the Source Scanner / AI Classification?
The Source Scanner uses an on-device neural network, to analyze your audio and identify what it contains (speech, music, environmental sounds, etc.). It provides confidence scores and can generate a timeline showing exactly when each sound type occurs—perfect for finding specific moments in long recordings.
How do vocal denoising and dereverb work?
RNNoise (Free): Lightweight, real-time noise reduction for light hiss and background noise.
DeepFilter (Pro): State-of-the-art AI for extreme environments. The dereverb engine removes room echo, giving you that "dry studio" sound even if you recorded in a bathroom.
What happens if I delete the app?
Warning: Tapes stores all data locally on your device. If you delete the app without backing up, all your recordings, projects, and settings will be permanently lost. We cannot recover this data because we never had access to it. Always use iOS backup features (iCloud or local backup) to protect your work.
How do I manage my Tapes Pro subscription?
Tapes Pro subscriptions are managed through Apple. To view, modify, or cancel your subscription: Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your Apple ID at the top, select Subscriptions, and find Tapes. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid being charged for the next period.
Why is stem separation taking a long time?
Stem separation is computationally intensive. Processing time depends on track length (longer = more time), device model (newer chips are faster), and chosen mode (4-stem takes longer than 2-stem). For best results, keep background apps closed and ensure your device has sufficient battery.
Can I use Tapes with external microphones?
Yes! Tapes automatically detects external audio interfaces and microphones connected to your device. This includes Lightning/USB-C audio interfaces, professional condenser mics, and Bluetooth audio devices. For best quality, use a wired connection.
